South Sudan’s first decade of independence was marked by violent conflict – and its efforts to recover from it.
Through the Technical Assistance to the Peace Process in South Sudan programme – funded by UK’s Conflict, Stability and Security Fund and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (2015-2022) – Tetra Tech provided technical assistance to key institutional mechanisms responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
As part of this, advisors were integrated into the two main bodies that are responsible for monitoring the implementation of the peace agreement (JMEC) and reporting on any ceasefire violations (CTSAMVM). In order for South Sudan’s peace agreement to be successful, it is vital that women are able to fully participate in the peace-building process. Thus, one of the programme’s key interventions aimed to empower women in the design and implementation of the process.
This case study outlines the multi-faceted approach of our team.
Our team shares how they brought more women into CTSAMVM, while also targeting women in power to raise awareness for the role of women in the peace agreement. Thanks to our team members’ expertise, experience and global network – particularly that of Tetra Tech’s Civil Affairs and Gender Advisor – we were able to mobilise and engage with influential civil society organisations that focus on and are led by women, church leaders and youth groups. We put a particular emphasis on recording and monitoring causalities involving women, children and youth.
