The people of North Macedonia are learning about their country’s ambitious climate-conscious energy development strategy, through a communications campaign that has been devised with the guidance of our team working on the UK government’s Western Balkans Technical Assistance Facility (TAF WB).
The Government of the Republic of North Macedonia (GoNM) is actively working on the harmonisation of its energy and environmental legislation with the EU directives and regulations, in order to fulfil the commitments under the pan-European Energy Community Treaty. It is coordinating its work under its Energy Development Strategy 2040, which is driving energy sector modernisation and transformation in a way that is socially inclusive, gender responsive, and is in line with EU energy trends.
Through our work on the TAF WB, a strand of the Good Governance Fund, Tetra Tech International Development Europe and partners supported the GoNM to develop a clear, well-structured, evidenced-based five-year programme for the implementation of the strategy, and the transformational Green scenario that it is pursuing. This first Implementation Programme covers 2021-2025.
While the implementation of the strategy is a long-term activity, the people of North Macedonia need to be kept informed of what’s happening, and this is where the communications products produced as part of the project come in. Through videos and infographics that are easily digestible and shareable, the project has helped the GoNM to spread knowledge and gain the trust of key stakeholders to the strategy, including the media, the business community, and citizens.
The communications work also saw our project team rapidly organise the online Vision for Energy Transition 2040 conference in January 2020. At the request of the UK embassy in North Macedonia, we were tasked with promoting the activities related to the revision of the Energy Development Strategy 2040 and the preparation of the Implementation Programme. The conference took place during Energy Saving Week (18-24 January) and facilitated discussion on government priorities and planned measures in the medium term, addressing the implementation of the Green Agenda. Over 100 participants attended across multiple sectors, including government, civil society, academia, private sector and energy companies.
